April stands as the fourth month of the calendar and is the first of the four months to have 30 days of length. April has the season of autumn in parts of Southern Hemisphere whereas, the Northern Hemisphere experiences spring. The birth of the months name April came from the verb “aperire, which means “to open”. This is so because April has the season of new trees and flowers to begin.

This day is observed as the suffering of Lord Jesus and his death at Calvary. It is the preceding Friday of the Easter Sunday. Sometimes it coincides with the observance of the Passover festival. There are other names by which this festival is known- Holy Friday, Great Friday, and Black Friday. The date of Good Friday varies from year to year. People visit the church on this day, worship the Lord and make prayers. Some even keep a fast on this day. As per the tradition, fish is the meal of Good Friday.
Meat is abstained from eating on this very day. Some of the fish recipes that is prepared on this day are- Salmon Steaks, Salmon Burger, Honey Garlic Glazed Salmon, Mussels with tomato and garlic etc. There is no particular or traditional celebration on this day as it is referred to as “sorrowful Friday”.

Easter commemorates restoration of Jesus’s life from the dead as described in the second division of the Christian biblical canon that occurred on the third day of the burial of Jesus’s body. The week before Easter is known as “Holy Week”. Easter is also known as “Pascha”. Just like Good Friday, Easter Sunday also do not fall on a particular date and is a movable feast. Easter is celebrated by committing services at the Church, Festive meals with family, Easter egg decoration and Gift giving. There is also all-night vigil and sunrise service by the devotees.

Gudi Padwa is marked as the traditional New Year for Marathi and Konkani Hindus. It is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month in and near Maharashtra, Goa as the beginning of the New Year according to the Hindu calendar. It is also known as Marathi New Year. The word “Padwa” has been derived from the Sanskrit word “pratipada” which means the first day of the lunar fortnight. The festival is celebrated by preparing festive foods, rangolis on the floor etc.
A special Gudi flag is also made which is again decorated with garland, mango leaves, neem leaves, and topped with upturned silver or copper vessel. It is a religious, social and cultural festival. The significance of Gudi Padwa is arrival of the spring season and reaping of Rabi crops.
This day is also celebrated by Telegu Hindus and they call it as Ugadi and the Sindhi community celebrates this day as Cheti Chand and worship Lord Jhulelaal and that is why this day is also known as Jhulelaal Jayanti.

This day is celebrated in the memory of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar who was born on 14th of April, 1891. It is also known as Bhim Jayanti. 2015 onwards, this day has been declared as an official public holiday throughout India. This day is celebrated not just in India but all over the world. Dr. Ambedkar’s birthday is celebrated as “Equality Day” in India as he kept struggling for equality throughout his life. The processions of Ambedkar Jayanti are carried out at Chaitya Bhoomi and Deeksha Bhoomi in Mumbai and Nagpur respectively by his followers.

A Hindu festival which is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Rama is called Rama Navami. Lord Rama is considered as the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu and hence, he is very particularly important to the Vaishnavism tradition. This festival comes in the spring Navratri and is on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha. This day is not a government holiday in India. On this day people recite Lord Rama’s stories including the sacred epic Ramayana. People visit the temples and take part in bhajans and kirtans. This festival is widely celebrated in Ayodhya and many other Lord Rama temples. The victory of goodness over evil and the establishment of Dharma over Adharma is the significance of this festival.

An annual event to support the environment for its protection is called Earth Day. It was first held in 1970 and is a fixed annual event. John McConnell, a peace activist proposed a day to honor the Earth in San Francisco in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference. United States focused the first Earth Day. Millions of people gathered on the streets and this first Earth Day is the largest single day protest in history till date. Due to these activities, it is considered to be the largest secular observance in the world.

This is one of the most religious festivals of Jainism and is referred to as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir. It is also called Mahavir Janma Kalyanak. It is said that Lord Mahavir was born on the thirteenth day of the Chaitra month according to the Jain texts. Kundagram is considered as Mahavir’s birth place. “Vardhaman” was the name given to Mahavir meaning “one who grows”.
Mahavir Jayanti is a religious Indian festival. Devotees visit the Mahavir temple for prayers and other religious rituals.
