Who was Maharana Pratap?                    

Maharana Pratap, originally named as Pratap Singh I, was a Hindu king of Mewar in 16th century. He was titled as “Mewari Rana.” Maharana Pratap was known for participating in ‘Battle of Haldighati’ and ‘Battle of Dewair’.

Born on May 9th 1540 in Rajasthan, Maharana Pratap was the eldest to 25 siblings. His father Maharana Udai Singh II was the king of Mewar and after his death Pratap was the crowned king.

Maharana Pratap’s life revolved around winning back Chittor, a city in Rajasthan India, from the Mughals. He fought in Battle of Haldighati against Akbar when the Mughal King asked him to become a vessel. During the battle, Pratap Singh was at a serious disadvantage in numbers against the Mughal Military. Even though Mughals won the battle after a serious battle, they failed to capture Maharana Pratap.

Akbar tried to invade Mewar three times after that and failed each time because of Pratap Singh. While Akbar was situated in Lahore, Maharana Pratap won back majority of his kingdom, excluding Chittor.

Later the Rajput King built a new capital in Chavand. In his court he gave roof to many poets, artists, and writes. He promoted and supported art in every form.

Pratap breathed his last on 19th January. Reportedly, he was seriously injured in a hunting accident. He died at the age of 56.

All his life Maharana Pratap Singh had fought for his people, his honour and his pride. He never gave up and submitted to the Mughals, for that he will be always remembered.
