Life Story of Rabindranath Tagore

Born in Kolkata (then known as Calcutta) on 7th May in the year of 1961, Tagore was raised in a cultural environment thanks to his family which was in forefront during Bengal renaissance.

Young Tagore was left in the care of house servants. The servants often used to leave him alone in a room by drawing a line around him, and young Tagore could not bring courage to step out of it after hearing what happened to Sita when she stepped out of the line drawn by Lakshmana in Ramayana. From there, he looked out of their window and was often mesmerized by the smallest things in nature. This played a great role in his life as later he often drew inspirations from nature. At the age of eight Rabindranath Tagore wrote his first poem.

Rabindranath visited more than 30 countries during his lifetime, and came across many people due to that. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for his work “Geetanjali” in 1913. The british king George V awarded him a knighthood, which he renounced after the Jallianwal Bagh massacre. Tagore wrote many patriotic songs which were sang by patriots during fight against the British Government. From his compositions, some were chosen as the National Anthem of two countries- “Jana Gana Mana” of India and “Amar Sonar Bangla” of Bangladesh. His work also influenced Sri Lanka’s National Anthem.

Tagore, all his life, despised the idea of learning inside four walls. As a result he founded the Viswa Bharati University where students could learn surrounded by nature, without being enclosed in four wall.

The great poet passed away at 7th August, 1941 at the age of 80. His works still continue to inspire many to this day.
