To everyone who fasts, It is essential to listen to holy story of Savitri. According to Vat Savitri Vrat Katha, Narada came to Savitri to inform that her husband Satyavan was going to die soon and she should choose a new husband. Then Savitri replied that she can only marry once. Later after her husband died under a banyan tree, she followed the Yama (death God) Yama was surprised to see her love and dedication for her husband and so he decided to give Savitri three boons. Savitri asked for the eye light for her mother in-law, lost kingdom of father in-law and wished to become the mother of hundred sons of her husband Satyavan. After, Savitri returned to the tree to see her husband alive. This was how with dedication and fasting Savitri saved her husband from the clutches of Yama.
Since then, the fasting and worshipping the Banyan Tree ritual started.
