Happy Vishu 2022 : Vishu, pronounced as visu is a Hindu festival celebrated in the southern states of India. Scientifically speaking Vishu is equinox that is when the sun rises in the constellation of Aries however, there are some Ancient myths behind the celebration of Vishu. It is believed to be the celebration of the victory of the Lord Krishna in defeating the demon Narakasura.
Another belief is that it is the return of the sun after the defeat of the demon Ravana because he never allowed the sun to rise from the east and when Ravana was killed, the sun returned, and it was celebrated as Vishu.
Vishu 2022 Date & Day
Vishu is the 1st day of the 9th month, called medam according to solar calendar of Kerala, which is always 14th or 15th of April in Gregorian calendar every year. This year, Vishu in Malayalam calendar is marked for 14th April. Indian National calendar sets the date of vishu. Vishu literally means, ‘equal’. It is the day of meda sankranti or meda sankranam, which is equinox, implying equal hours of day and night which is celebrated by Vishu Kani or Malayalam New Year.
According to astronomical calendar the spring equinox occur on March 20th or 21st, this difference is because the equinox was observed on the day in which sun rises in the constellation of Aries and this day shifted over centuries due to the movement of Earth. This indicates that vishu is a festival which has been celebrated for centuries. It is believed that, from the regin of Sthanu Ravi, 844 AD, vishu is being celebrated.
How is Vishu celebrated?
The day of vishu is a ceremonial splendor, it is a union of family. The arrangements start a day before vishu. The females of the family sets vishukani for the family. The word, ‘kani’ literally mean the first sight that we see when we open our eyes. It is believed that, an auspicious sight on the day of vishu would bring joy and prosperity for the rest of the year. The day of vishu starts with ‘Vishukani’, at dawn. It is a colourful arrangement of various items like kanikonna, which is Indian laburnum, idol of lord Krishna with flute, a metal lantern called nilavilak, fresh vegetables and fruits, silk clothes, metals like gold and silver etc.
After vishukani the whole family visits nearby temple in vishukodi, which is new dress bought for vishu and prays for the coming year. Children crakes firecrackers for the day. For the breakfast, a special food called vishukanji is served. It is a porridge made of rice and coconut and spices. Lunch for the day is a grand feast called sadhya where rice with various side dishes like thoran, aviyal, sambar, pulisheri, rasam, erisheri, pappadam, etc followed by an amazing dessert called payasam is served.
Vishukatta another special food which is made of jaggery and coconut along with spices are prepared as a snack. Vishu kaineetam is another special features of the day. Kaineetam literally means a gift given in the hand. Vishu kaineetam is a gift given by the elders to their younger ones, which mostly is money or gold or any other valuables.
Vishu Kani Item List
Vishukani is the first sight in the day of vishu. Kani means 1st sight when eyes are opened. Vishu is the beginning of an auspicious year which would depend on the first sight of the day of vishu that is why vishukani is arranged. It is a combination of colourful item which would make our mind happy and fresh. Females of the family make the arrangements.
The family at the dawn of vishu see this as their first sight. It consists of idol of lord Krishna holding flute, metal lantern called nilavilak, in a metal vessal called urali various items including kanikonna, which is Indian laburnum, fresh fruits and vegetables like cucumber, jackfruit, coconut, mangoes, banana, raw rice, cereals, etc are filled, vaalkannadi which is a mirror with a holder, metals like gold and silver are place, silk clothes.
These are arranged in the prayer room. Holy book, tools used for work, water are also sometimes placed in some areas. Vishukani must be at dawn. Family members wakes up at dawn and reaches the prayer room with closed eyes and see this vishukani as their first sight for the day. The nilavilaku should be lighted, also water should be springled over the eyes before opening it. Only after kani prayer service starts.
