Early Days & Family of GALILEO GALILEI

Famous Italian unique and great scientist, philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician Galileo, in full Galileo Galilei. Born on February 15, 1564, Pisa, Italy—died on January 8, 1642, Arcetri, near Florence, he was called “father of observational astronomy”, the “father of modern physics”, the “father of scientific method” and the “father of modern science”. He was the oldest son born to Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia di Cosimo  Ammannati. Galileo’s father was a flute player, music composer, and theorist of that period. In 1574, they moved to Florence where he attended the Camaldolese Monastery school at Vallombrosa. His father wanted him to become a doctor, hence he was enrolled for a medical degree in 1581, at the University of Pisa. There he found his interest in mathematics and science and decided to move forward with these subjects without the permission of his family.

After returning home with no degree in hand he was left with no choice. He then started teaching mathematics to earn his living. Greek methodologies inspired him, and he started reading ancient Greek mathematician and philosophers-Pythagoras, Archimedes, and many more to make his discoveries. At the age of 25, he became instantly famous after publishing a book, while teaching mathematics. He became completely dedicated to this subject. The book was the extension of Archimedes’ work. After the fame, he received for the book. He was then invited to join the University of Pisa, as a math professor.

He was equally interested in astronomy. To observe the sky, he built a telescope for himself. Galileo made many observations of our Solar System using this telescope where he discovered that the sun and the other planets do not revolve around the sun. In 1632, Galileo published a book that said the Earth revolve around the Sun. He was arrested by the powerful Catholic Church for publishing this book.  He was still in jail at the time of his death. Maybe that’s why famous inspirational quotes by Galileo Galilei are very popular & inspire the youth.

  • Galileo Galilei found new worlds with his telescope.
  • We all know that Galileo invented the telescope. But it’s not true, he did not discover a telescope instead he discovered the ways how to use it and made it more significant which magnified objects twenty times, which abled him to see moons’ surface and Jupiter satellites.
  • Crater’s, valleys, and mountains on the moon’s surface- Claimed moons’ surface is not smooth, but rough due to the presence of valleys, mountains, and craters. Due to rotation around the sun, its shadows changed.
  • The phases of Venus- Like those of moons Venus showed crescent phases, but their geometry could only be described if Venus was revolving around the Sun rather than the Earth.
  • Jupiter moons- Four tiny satellites accompanied Jupiter by revolving around it. They are named Galilean moons- Io, Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto.
  • Stats of the Milky way- Millions of individual stars collectively made the milky way which is seen as a band of misty light.
  • First pendulum clock- He discovered the operational theory in which the pendulum works.
  • A hydrostatic balance- Used in weighing precious metals in air and then in water to determine their purity was a common practice among jewellers.
  • A forerunner to the modern thermometer- A device that shows temperature changes, in which a liquid rises and falls according to the change of temperature.

  • Use of telescope to examine the sky.
  • Four largest moons of Jupiter – Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Calisto.
  • Proved the heliocentric model by his discovery of the Phases of Venus
  • The Assayer (Il Saggiatore)
  • The basic principle of relativity

  1. He didn’t have any engineering degree– he was a college dropout.
  2. He was not the one who invented the telescope. Rather he was the one who used that optical instrument systematically. He developed the design of the telescope to make it more significant.
  3. He was under house arrest in his final days- The proposal of the earth rotating around the sun (supported by Copernicus) was declared unorthodox by the Catholic Church who argued that the earth is in the centre of the universe.
  4. He had three children without being married- two of them Virginia and Livia were sent to the convent of San Matteo, where they remained rest of their lives. The oldest daughter, Vincenzo stayed with his mother, Marina Gamba, when Galileo left.
  5. Galileo’s eldest daughter was a nun named Sister Maria Celeste.
  6. A spacecraft was named Galileo by NASA- a German team and NASA launched Galileo spacecraft from Atlantis to Jupiter to study the planets and their moons.
  7. He was blind when he died- It was believed that solar observations were the cause for his blindness. But now with extensive modern research, the reasons are either complicated cataract or chronic glaucoma.
  8. After his death, during the burial vertebrae, three of his finger along with a tooth was removed from his dead body. The middle finger of his right hand is displayed in various museums in Italy, since at least the first half of the 1800s.
