From the twelve  Sankrantis in Hinduism, Kumbha Sankranti is the second last. The propitious time  of the day is finite and differs every year because of the location of the planets  Jupiter, Sun and Moon. On this day, Kumbha Mela which is the largest religious  festival takes place where millions of people come to have a sacred bath in the  waters of River Ganga. It is believed that having a Holy bath in the Ganga River  eliminates all the wicked and immoral acts of past. It reflects the common desire  of the Hindus.

Kumbha Mela has a mythological backdrop. Kumbha sankranti meaning has evolved from the period when  Deities and Devils inhabited on earth.

Kumbha means ‘pot of nectar’ that came out from the Krishna Ganga. Legends  say that Deities had lost their supreme power and so, they went to Lord Brahma  and Lord Shiva with a hope to get their powers back. Lord Brahma directed them  the strategy to reclaim their powers by agitating Krishna Sagar and collecting the  pot of nectar. Various objects were seen coming from inside the sea from a  magical cow called Halala. The deities and devils decided to divide the pot of  nectar by common consent as it was a hard task.

But when the pot of Amrit came out, it resulted into a rift between the deities and  the devils to gain immortality which continued for twelve days and twelve nights (but twelve years as per human datebook). Consequently, Lord Vishnu  transformed himself into a gorgeous lady, Mohini and flew away with the pot.  While he was taking off, drops of nectar fell from the pot at four different places.

These places, where the nectar fell, are the Ganga river in Haridwar, the Shipra river in Ujjain, the  Godaveri river in Nasik and at the junction of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati  rivers in Allahabad where Kumbha Mela is observed every twelve years. The  junction of these rivers is known as the Sangam. Maha Kumbh mela is celebrated  every 144 years at Prayag (modern Prayagraj).
